The US constitution is a tangle of grand Enlightenment ideals and messy post-monarchic politics. American history is, in some senses, the long and painful process of rescuing the ideals from the politics.
Of all states, you’d think Oklahoma would be conscious of the fact that US history is complicated and “American exceptionalism” is at best a problematic claim. If only those state legislators had had better US history classes in high school.
