“Is this on the exam?”

“No, it’s behind the exam and a little bit to the left.”

  1. Yet, somehow, businesses everywhere still value that slip of paper above anything else… even experience in most cases. It is a rather ironic clash of facts, no?

  2. As much as I grumble, I can’t really blame my students for being exam-focused. It’s what they’ve been taught all their lives: that doing well on an exam is what matters. I think that one of the most important things I try to teach them is that what matters in life is who they are and what they can do, not how well they can guess the answer to a multiple choice question. The real measure of their success in my class is not what grade they get on exam but how they have changed as a result of the experience.
